Plantar Fasciitis

One of the most common causes of heel and arch pain. Seeking treatment can significantly improve your quality of life.

What is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is inflammation of the plantar fascia which leads to heel pain, there may be micro tears within the fascia as a result of overuse as well. Sometimes, heel pain may become chronic, causing thickening and degeneration of the plantar fascia. In these cases, there is no inflammation present in the plantar fascia region, but significant fibrosis and scar tissue builds in the region. This is referred to as plantar fasciosis.

Causes and Risk Factors of Plantar Fasciitis
  1. Overuse injury - chronic stress due to doing too much too quickly

  2. Biomechanics - individuals with flatfeet or high arches tend to place significant pressure on the heels and plantar fascia

  3. Footwear - improper footwear such as high heels can cause stress on plantar fascia

  4. Fat pad atrophy with age

  5. Increased age

  6. Osteoarthritis

  7. Rheumatoid arthritis and other related conditions

  8. Obesity

  9. Occupation/lifestyle - runners and individuals that are on their feet in their work environment are more prone to developing heel pain

Plantar Fasciitis Prevention
  1. Wear supportive footwear

  2. Maintain a healthy bodyweight

  3. Proper training. Take breaks, have rest days. Avoid doing too much too quickly. Gradually increase activity

  4. Plantar fascia stretches before and after activity. Strengthening foot muscles and stretching calf muscles as well

Treatment Options
  1. Extracorporeal shockwave therapy and ultrasound therapy

  2. PRICE Therapy: involves pain management via anti-inflammatory medications such as Tylenol. Rest, Ice the area daily, cold compresses to the area, and elevating the foot in the case of inflammation

  3. Over-the-counter heel cup inserts or OTC plantar fascia insoles to help reduce pressure form the heel

  4. Pressure redistribution by adding felt padding into current footwear

  5. Plantar fascia stretches

  6. Proper indoor and outdoor footwear based on foot type
